His shoulders so tired from bearing the weight
of his buddy's torn body across them,
he kept constant chatter to keep him awake
repeating, "You'll get home, I promise."

In the distance, he heard the helo's whop whop.
"Do you hear that?" he laughed as he asked his old friend.
"They're finally here, that's our ride home!"
And he raised his eyes to the sky.

And in that brief moment, his eyes occupied
he took one misguided step.
The explosion lifted both to the sky
as the pilot watched them go home.
You ask any soldier who's been in the field about a helo's whop whop. Trust me, they ALL recognize that term for its sound and identify specific feelings towards it.
